Acupuncture for IVF Support
Acupuncture for IVF/IUI Support
If you’re thinking about starting fertility treatment, such as IVF or IUI, acupuncture is the ideal support partner for your journey. Research consistently shows the positive role acupuncture plays with one study1 showing acupuncture can increase the chances of IVF pregnancy by 65%.
Part of my decision to specialise in acupuncture supporting assisted reproduction came from my own fertility struggle. Since qualifying over 10 years ago, I’m proud to say I have not only gone on to have two beautiful children but gained a reputation as the go-to IVF acupuncturist in Bucks. I have also undertaken post-graduate training allowing me to become a member of the Acupuncture Fertility Network. What does this all mean for you? You’re assured of the best possible outcome, of which I am pleased to say, there have been many! – you can read their feedback here.
How Acupuncture for IVF and IUI works
Acupuncture stimulates the sensory nerves in the body, prompting a natural healing response that helps restore hormonal balance and improve fertility.
Used in China for centuries to aid conception and pregnancy, many western clinics and fertility practitioners now recommend acupuncture for women undertaking IVF and IUI.
Acupuncture supports assisted reproduction in several ways, including:
- Regulating hormone levels and the menstrual cycle
- Improving blood flow to the ovaries and uterus
- Increasing thickness of the uterus lining, supporting implantation of the embryo
- Relaxing the uterus muscles, increasing successful embryo implantation
Enhancing patient relaxation
What IVF issues do you treat?
As well as helping with the above, acupuncture helps prevent abnormal cramping which can lead to ectopic pregnancy (where the fertilised egg implants outside of the womb). It can also help reduce the side effects of medications given during fertility treatments, ranging from severe headaches to nausea. Many of my clients undergoing regular acupuncture find these effects less severe.
Acupuncture is also effective for treating conditions which can impact conception, such as Endometritis (where tissue that lines the womb grows outside the uterus) and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which impacts how the ovaries work.
When is the best time to start Acupuncture for IVF/IUI?
Ideally, acupuncture should start three months prior to starting IVF or IUI treatment. However, sometimes this isn’t possible, in which case it is best to get started right away, as starting later is better than not starting at all.
Once fertility treatment is underway, acupuncture is recommended at specific times during the cycle to achieve best outcome. I can discuss this with you at your initial consultation.
How does Acupuncture for IVF/IUI work?
Before treatment begins, we will talk about the type of fertility treatment you are considering or undertaking, along with your medical history and previous experiences of pregnancy and/or assisted reproduction.
You’ll then be asked to sit or lie down and, after cleansing the areas, very fine needles will be painlessly inserted into specific acupuncture points on the body. In a typical session anywhere between five and twenty may be applied – these then stay in position for a minimum of twenty minutes, allowing you time to relax. Most clients finding the acupuncture session ideal for meditating, breathing or just having some much-needed quiet time.
Nutrition and Lifestyle Advice for IVF Success
A key component of acupuncture therapy is looking at your health and wellbeing in its totality. As well as exploring medical factors that may impact your fertility, we will go through your lifestyle habits and nutrition. I am a firm believer that food is medicine, helping nurture and nourish your whole being. We will look at foods that complement your digestive system to help bring you back into balance. Even small diet tweaks can make a big difference to falling and staying pregnant.
